On May 25, 2026, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, held talks with Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, in Beijing.
Wang Yi stated that over the past year, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries and the joint efforts of both sides, the China-Singapore all-round high-quality forward-looking partnership has maintained a sound momentum. The prime ministers of the two countries exchanged visits last year, the two countries jointly celebrated the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and cooperation in various fields has continuously reached new levels. China and Singapore are different in size, but both are stabilizing forces in the world. Facing the intertwined changes and chaos in the international situation, both China and Singapore firmly uphold multilateralism, adhere to free trade, and advocate the international system with the United Nations at its core. The two countries should continue to strengthen strategic communication, enhance mutual trust, jointly address the current emerging global challenges, and safeguard the overall peace and stability of the region.
Wang Yi said that China attaches great importance to developing relations with Singapore, and is willing to always leverage the advantage of China-Singapore relations keeping pace with the times, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, promote practical cooperation in various fields, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and play a leading and exemplary role in the region. Maintaining the security of global industrial and supply chains and the smooth flow of maritime navigation is the common aspiration of all countries in the world and conforms to the common interests of the international community. China is willing to continue to make efforts in this regard. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Singapore is an important member of ASEAN and will assume the rotating presidency of ASEAN next year. China looks forward to Singapore continuing to play an active role in promoting China-ASEAN cooperation.
Vivian Balakrishnan said that the world today faces many unstable and uncertain factors, but Singapore and China have always maintained a high level of mutual trust and close cooperation, and bilateral relations have remained vibrant. Singapore highly values its relations with China, and in the current complex international situation, Singapore-China cooperation and exchanges are of crucial importance. Singapore abides by the one-China policy and firmly opposes "Taiwan independence". This policy is long-term and consistent and will never change. Singapore will not do anything that violates or undermines China's interests. Singapore highly appreciates China's development and rejuvenation through reform and opening up, and its contributions to maintaining global supply chains and free trade. It believes that China has greater development potential in the future. Singapore is willing to maintain close high-level exchanges with China, promote practical cooperation in trade and investment, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, education, science and technology, talent training, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, etc., build key China-Singapore cooperation projects well, and promote regional connectivity.
Vivian Balakrishnan said that the continued opening of the Strait of Malacca is in the interests of all parties, and Singapore supports the free passage of the Strait of Malacca and other international waterways. Singapore is willing to promote greater progress in the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, support the Global Development Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, support multilateralism and free trade, and is willing to work with China to safeguard the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core and jointly make efforts to promote world peace, development and prosperity.
The two sides also had an extensive exchange of views on international and regional issues of common concern.
